As of today, the province of Sistan and Baluchistan has the highest prevalence of this disease in the southeast of Iran, with about 3,000 thalassemia patients. Adrenal dysfunction has been reported to arise in patients with beta-thalassemia major due to iron deposition in adrenal glands.
